“Why I Give” is a recurring series of articles about the people who support the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.
Meet Kathy and Jerry Pharr. She serves as UGA vice president of marketing and communications and senior advisor to President Jere Morehead. He is a trombonist and retired music educator who has been rehired part-time by Buford City Schools and Jackson County Schools. (Oddly enough, though Kathy is a Triple Dawg, she had never rung the Chapel Bell.)
Why do we give? That’s easy to answer.
We give because we love the arts and because we love the University of Georgia.
We met as Redcoat Band members more than 40 years ago: one of us, a legit musician; and the other, simply someone who liked music. We performed in several ensembles and attended numerous concerts and plays, but we never experienced performance halls with the exquisite acoustics of the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.
Each season, we are blessed to enjoy talented and diverse professional artists who challenge and inspire us. We also attend incredible performances by UGA faculty and students, and we have seen many budding young musicians perform here as well.
The arts enrich our lives. It is our pleasure to demonstrate our thanks not merely by purchasing tickets, but by donating a little more each season to preserve them for years to come.
