ATHENS, Ga. — Greek mythology gets a thoroughly modern makeover when UGA Presents brings the U.S. premiere of Unmythable, a production of the English theatre company Out of Chaos, to the Morton Theatre for performances Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6, at 7:30 p.m.
Part of the UGA Presents Into the Myths series, Unmythable is an outrageously physical and irreverent one-hour journey through some of the most famous stories of the ancient Greek world. Combining sketch comedy, clowning, storytelling, and song, the production turns an epic collection of gods, heroes and monsters into fast-moving theatrical mayhem.
Two actors take on the entire Greek mythological universe, bringing to life Jason and his Argonauts, Medusa, Persephone, Hades, Medea and a host of other legendary figures. Along the way, audiences encounter the capture of Troy, the creation and punishment of humanity and the blinding of a certain one-eyed monster.
The production—a hit at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe—was devised by Richard Darbourne, Troels Hagen Findsen, Paul O’Mahony, and Mike Tweddle, with additional writing by O’Mahony and Tweddle. O’Mahony and Hannah Barrie perform the production, directed by Tweddle.
Unmythable is characteristic of the inventive, highly physical style of Out of Chaos, whose productions have toured extensively throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, and New Zealand. The company has earned awards in England, Germany, Scotland, and Spain, and is known for creating original work that combines theatrical virtuosity with a playful approach to storytelling.
The production also draws on the performers’ extensive experience in classical theatre. Barrie trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe, Northern Broadsides and Opera North, as well as for the BBC and ITV. She is an associate artist of Out of Chaos and has performed in the company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
O’Mahony is an actor, writer, director, and producer whose work with Out of Chaos includes Out of Chaos, Unmythable, Norsesome, Is Now A Good Time? and There’s Something Going On Here. His acting credits include the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Othello and work with the Orange Tree Theatre, English Touring Opera and Battersea Arts Centre. He also directs the Greek Theatre Program at the British American Drama Academy.
