“Why I Give” – John and Maxine Rofrano

February 2, 2024

A man and a woman sit on brick steps in front of a set of wood doors. They are holding three colorful parrots.

This is part of a series of monthly articles about people who support the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.

Meet John and Dr. Maxine Rofrano. He’s a retired investment manager. She’s a psychologist with clients all over the world who has written 12 books. They live at Lake Oconee at the mercy of three parrots and four dogs. This season they are sponsoring the April 21 appearance by countertenor Jakub Józef Orlin´ski and Il Pomo d’Oro.

JOHN ROFRANO’S TOP TEN REASONS FOR FINANCIALLY SUPPORTING THE UGA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

10. Maybe if we give enough we can bring the parrots.

9. The Lake Oconee area is lacking in quality string quartets.

8. Athens is a lot closer than Atlanta or Columbia, S.C.

7. Poor finances mean bringing in less expensive performers like Kathleen Battle,
Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman (if only).

6. We like to visit Trader Joe’s and Costco before concerts.

5. Low cash flow can mean a decrease in the number of performances — with
bingo being substituted for the open dates.

But seriously . . .
4. We want the UGA Performing Arts Center to have the financial wherewithal
to make improvements in areas like amplified sound and lighting of the
concert hall.

3. We want the Center to be able to expand its outreach program to schools,
thus helping to create the concertgoers of tomorrow.

2. We want to leave a mark for the future on something that we enjoy
immensely today.

1. We want to help the Performing Arts Center in its quest to continue to
bring world class entertainment to Athens. This is not possible unless we and
other concertgoers step up and pledge financial support for individual concerts,
as the University is not permitted to do so.
