The time has come — and Time For Three is on the way! After a year and a half of minimal activity, the UGA Performing Arts Center is back in business, welcoming audiences to a formidable 25th anniversary celebration that culminates in April and May 2022.
Classically trained indie-pop trio Time For Three opens the season Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. They’re known for exquisite string playing and close harmony singing. As the Strad magazine has written: “This remarkable group is not to be missed, and its members play (and sing) with joy, mastery, creativity and supreme artistry in all that they do; truly, no one else is like Time for Three.”
The next day, Friday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m., England’s Doric String Quartet will be joined by celebrated pianist Jonathan Biss for an evening of Beethoven, Bartók and Elgar. Admission to this annual Payne Memorial Concert is free but tickets are required. The event is named for Dr. William Jackson “Jack” Payne, former Dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, who founded the Franklin College Chamber Music Series in 1978. In honor of his efforts, the Payne Memorial Concert is presented free to the public once each season.
“During the pandemic, the Performing Arts Center has hosted online events—concerts and conversations—without audiences or with very small ones,” Performing Arts Center Director Jeffrey Martin said. “We are beyond ready to have a steady stream of performers on our stages, and to reward them with applause.”
The UGA Performing Arts Center celebrated its opening in 1996 with gala performances by soprano Jessye Norman and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. This 25th anniversary season includes a gala April 24, 2022 featuring Broadway star and six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald. The celebratory week concludes with an Atlanta Symphony concert May 1.
“Not only has the world changed significantly since we first opened our doors 25 years ago, it has changed dramatically in the last year as we have endured the devastating impact of a global pandemic, social injustice, political uncertainty, and any number of other things,” Martin said. “These experiences underscore the importance of the performing arts in our lives. As we gather together this season, we will tap into the power of the arts to unite us, to heal us, and to help us navigate the many difficult emotions we have been feeling.”
