Classical music, country music, and conversations highlight UGA Presents’ virtual fall programming in November. The series of events features a variety of intimate performances online in Studio HH as well a live solo violin recital in Hodgson Concert Hall by international rising star (and Athens resident!) Itamar Zorman. Several events are free and do not require registration or tickets; others require paid admission for in-person and/or online viewing. All events can be accessed on the UGA Performing Arts Center’s website, pac.uga.edu.

November 4, 7:30 p.m. and November 5-6, 6:30 p.m. & 8:00 p.m.

Live music continues in Hodgson Hall this autumn with this special program of solo violin music exploring the connection between music and space that has sparked the curiosity of humans for thousands of years. This 35-minute performance features compositions by Philip Glass, Kaija Saariaho, and Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe. Also included: Johann Sebastian Bach, whose works were recorded on the Golden Records shipped to outer space on the Voyager spacecraft expedition in 1977.
Limited in-person seating for approximately 15 people will be available (face coverings and social distancing required). The performance can also be livestreamed from any location online at pac.uga.edu.

CMS’s Artist Series continues with acclaimed violinist Arnaud Sussman leading a program of two works: Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and Chausson’s Concerto in D Major. This prerecorded performance includes an artist featurette video and a post-event Q&A with Co-Artistic Directors Wu Han and David Finckel (also prerecorded).

One of the most influential musicians in the world of classical music today, Wu Han leads a multifaceted career as a concert pianist, Co-Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and cultural entrepreneur. She joins PAC director Jeffrey Martin for a conversation about her thoughts regarding the past, present, and future of chamber music—this musical form she works so tirelessly and enthusiastically to promote around the globe.

Kathy Mattea: From Nashville

Hailed by the Washington Post as “one of Nashville’s finest song interpreters,” Kathy Mattea has enjoyed much success and acclaim during her 35-year career in country, bluegrass, and folk music, including two Grammy wins, four CMA Awards, four number one country singles, and five gold albums (plus a platinum greatest hits collection). In addition to creating and recording music and performing live on tour, Kathy is increasingly involved with public broadcasting, regularly guest-hosting on NPR’s long-running Mountain Stage (sitting in for longtime host Larry Groce), as well as consulting and contributing on screen in Ken Burns’s 2019 documentary, Country Music.
In this intimate and unique concert – filmed exclusively for UGA Presents – Mattea shares songs and stories from Tennessee with her fans in Athens. A Q&A with the artist will take place immediately following the premiere on Nov 20 (approx. 8:15 p.m.).
