Continuing its concert season dedicated to Peace, the Athens Choral Society will present “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace” by living Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. The piece was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum and was dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis. Based on the Mass, Jenkins combines with other sources, principally the 15th-century folk song “L’homme armé” and incorporates words from The Bible, the Islamic Call to Prayer, and the Mahabharata. Additional texts include writings by Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Sankichi Toge, who survived the Hiroshima bombing.
