World-Class Violinists Enliven Performing Arts Center’s 25th Anniversary Season

Celebrated Soloists Joshua Bell and Leonidas Kavakos Appear in Recital, Time for Three Blends Classical and Pop

The UGA Performing Arts Center’s 25th anniversary season ranges from classical music to Americana and dance. Among the offerings are four events featuring world-class violinists in repertoire ranging from J.S. Bach to indie pop.

The string-based band Time For Three (Oct. 14) includes classically trained violinists Charles Yang and Nick Kendall with bassist Ranaan Meyer. They all double as singers, as can be heard in their single “Deanna,” a yearning tune about doubt in a relationship. The group collaborated with cellist and composer Ben Sollee on the score for Land, actress Robin Wright’s directorial debut, released earlier this year.

The Seattle Times says Greek violinist and conductor Leonidas Kavakos (Nov. 1) “ranks among the greatest instrumentalists of our time.” He appears with pianist Yuja Wang, whom the San Francisco Chronicle calls “quite simply the most dazzlingly, uncannily gifted pianist in the concert world today.” They’ll play a pair of sonatas by J.S. Bach and big, engrossing works by Shostakovich and Busoni.

With a career spanning almost four decades, Joshua Bell (Feb. 11, 2022) is one of the most celebrated violinists of his era. Having performed with virtually every major orchestra in the world, he continues to maintain engagements as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, conductor, and Music Director of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. He has recorded more than forty albums—garnering Grammy, Mercury, Gramophone, and Opus Klassik awards—and was the featured soloist in the Academy Award-winning score to the film The Red Violin.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles return to Hodgson Concert Hall (May 1, 2022) with a robust program of symphonic classics for the final concert of the Performing Arts Center’s 25th Anniversary celebration week. The Scottish maestro leads the orchestra in Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, a four-movement fantasia on folk melodies in which ASO Concertmaster David Coucheron and principal harpist Elisabeth Remy Johnson bring the piece’s Celtic flavors to life.
