DESCRIPTION:Songs\, Battles\, and Dances from the Old and the New Worlds 1100-1780 \nGrammy Award winner Jordi Savall is one of the most versatile musical personalities of his generation. For more than 50 years\, the Catalonian musician has rescued musical gems from the obscurity of neglect and given them a new life for all to enjoy. He makes a highly anticipated return to Athens with his latest project\, Songs\, Battles\, and Dances from the Old and the New Worlds 1100-1780. This program shines a light on more than 600 years of music of endurance and resistance from Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas. \nFeaturing 21 musicians\, the performance is anchored by Savall’s early music ensemble Hespèrion XXI and the vocal group La Capella Reial de Catalunya. The performance also includes Mexico’s Tembembe Ensamble Continuo and musicians from Canada and Guadeloupe. Together they explore an era when music served as an instrument of peace\, a refuge for solace\, and a beacon of hope. \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Theresa Chafin in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:Ébène Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“In line with the quartet’s name\, the performance evoked the characteristics of ebony: opaque and dense\, much like the hardwood that gains depth and significance through polishing and appreciation of its intricate grain.”—Bachtrack\nAttending a concert by the French ensemble Quatuor Ébène is a musical experience unlike any other. For 25 years\, this award-winning string quartet has achieved new heights by transforming familiar repertoire into sounds beyond perfection and by constantly seeking a dynamic exchange with themselves and with the audience. The group’s first visit to UGA in 16 years promises to showcase the musicians at their very best\, performing Ravel’s brilliant string quartet alongside two of Beethoven’s iconic works. \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk in Hodgson Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 pm. \nNOTE\nUnfortunately\, the violist Marie Chilemme is unable to participate in the quartet’s spring tour. The wonderful Hélène Clément (former violist of the Doric String Quartet) will take her place for this performance.

SUMMARY:Cécile McLorin Salvant
DESCRIPTION:“There’s an intellectual playfulness to everything that Cécile McLorin Salvant’s velvety voice touches. It rises and falls with authority\, striking highs that flutter and lows that grumble and roar. Her wordplay teases\, taunts and tests in a way that forces her to not just sing a lyric\, but dive into roles with the zeal of a method actor.”—Downbeat\nSinger and composer Cécile McLorin Salvant is one of the greatest vocalists of her generation and a true creative force. She won Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album for three consecutive releases and a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship\, among many other honors. The late Jessye Norman once described her as “a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality\, which light up every note she sings.” Salvant comes to Hodgson Concert Hall at last to perform her glittering interpretations of jazz standards and unearthed treasures from her eclectic repertoire.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
DESCRIPTION:Due to the Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan concert taking place in nearby Sanford Stadium on Saturday\, April 25\, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s performance in Hodgson Concert Hall has been moved to Wednesday\, April 29\, 7:30 p.m. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. All tickets remain valid for the new date. Ticketholders may contact the Performing Arts Center Box Office (706-542-4400) if you have additional questions.\nQuintet Revelations\nThe piano quintet is a powerhouse chamber ensemble\, combining the sonic richness of a string quartet with the symphonic aura of grand piano. Inspired by Robert Schumann’s early example\, composers from the early Romantic age all the way through the 21st century have contributed significantly to the genre. Russian master Anton Arensky\, teacher of Rachmaninov\, penned his sole quintet in his mature years\, and ever-popular French composer Camille Saint-Saëns began his prolific chamber music career with this early quintet of surprising skill and maturity. Bracing violin duos by virtuosi of the Baroque and Classical eras serve as effervescent preludes. \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Naomi Graber in Hodgson Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:I Am A Voice That Sings
DESCRIPTION:I Am a Voice That Sings is a celebration of the joy\, courage\, and connection that live within all of us. Through a diverse and uplifting program performed by all ensembles of the Georgia Children’s Chorus – including works by Tracy Wong\, Benjamin Britten\, Marques L.A. Garrett\, Abbie Betinis\, and Michael Bussewitz-Quarm\, the concert explores music that reminds us to look beyond the noise and comparisons of the outside world and instead listen to the wisdom of our own hearts. These songs invite us to seek light in moments of uncertainty\, to support one another\, and to sing with honesty and hope. Above all\, we hope this program inspires our audience to remember a simple truth: each of us is enough\, and each of us is a voice that sings.

SUMMARY:The Del McCoury Band
DESCRIPTION:“McCoury is a national treasure.”—Washington Post \nEven among the pantheon of music’s finest\, Del McCoury stands alone. From the nascent sound of bluegrass that charmed hardscrabble hillbilly honky-tonks\, rural schoolhouse stages\, and the crowning glory of the Grand Ole Opry\, to the present day’s digital revolution\, Del is the living link. Now helming the Del McCoury Band\, with sons Ronnie and Rob\, he stands as a torchbearer for the entire sweep and scope of bluegrass history. In his sixth decade onstage\, he continues to endear himself to a whole new generation of fans. One listen and it’s crystal clear why: There’s only one Del.
