SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Film Screening: Naqoyqatsi
DESCRIPTION:Due to lingering effects of the winter storm\, this event has been cancelled. \nNaqoyqatsi (2002) chronicles one of the most significant events of the last five thousand years: the transition from the natural milieu\, old nature\, to the “new” nature\, the technological milieu. Blending archival footage with digital techniques\, it presents and confronts the new reality\, the consuming reality of the virtual. \nPhilip Glass’s score for the final film in director Godfrey Reggio’s wordless documentary trilogy (which also includes Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi) features a prominent solo part for cellist Yo-Yo Ma\, who is appearing at Hodgson Concert Hall Feb. 1\, 2026\, to mark the 30th anniversary of the UGA Performing Arts Center. \nAfter the screening\, there will be a discussion with these participants: \nCristina “Trinity” Vélez-Justo is an assistant professor of music and film and media scoring certificate director at UGA. Trinity composes music and designs audio for visual and interactive media as well as providing mentorship and independent education in media scoring and production. Before arriving at UGA\, Trinity taught at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. \nUGA Assistant Professor of Cello James Kim has appeared as soloist with orchestras such as the Boston Symphony and Royal Philharmonic; worked with conductors David Zinman\, Michael Sanderling\, Alexander Shelley\, and Keith Lockhart; and performed at Carnegie Stern Auditorium\, Zankel Hall\, Boston Symphony Hall\, Jordan Hall\, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nMark Mobley is director of marketing and communications for the UGA Performing Arts Center. He received the Peabody Award as musical head of the public radio program Performance Today\, and the ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award for distinguished music journalism while at the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk\, Virginia. \nTickets for this event can only be purchased directly from Ciné.
