Two acclaimed ensembles will present performances in March as part of the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center’s online Studio HH concert series. Both events were filmed in advance and will be streamed on the venue’s website for free.
Lysander Trio
Three local, world-class musicians unite for a program of works from the pan-European chamber music canon for this special performance filmed in February in Hodgson Concert Hall for UGA Presents. Concert pianist (and UGA Associate Professor) Liza Stepanova, concert violinist Itamar Zorman, and Rainer Eudeikis, principal cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, perform a program that visits Russia and France before concluding with German composer Robert Schumann’s most celebrated piano trio.
The performance is free and can be viewed on the Performing Arts Center’s website and YouTube channel March 18, 7:30 pm – through April 1.
Tenebrae
Filmed in the stunning surroundings of St Augustine’s Kilburn Church in London, this beautiful concert film gives fans of this exquisite British choral ensemble the opportunity to experience a Tenebrae performance in the comfort of your own home.
Tenebrae performs a poignant sequence of Renaissance choral works, opening with Tallis’ If ye Love Me. Performed regularly by choirs of all shapes and sizes, this simple motet is perhaps one of the most well-loved in the repertoire, but until now this miniature masterpiece hasn’t featured in the ensemble’s recording output. The program also includes Byrd’s iconic Ne irascaris Domine, the text of which is achingly apt for the present time. While Byrd was lamenting the fate of Catholics in a newly Protestant England, today we find our cities deserted and forlorn as we struggle to bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control. The program concludes with Taedet anima mea, the opening movement of Victoria’s Requiem Mass, 1605, also featured on Tenebrae’s award-winning recording of the same name.
