“Why I Give” – Ian Hardin and Carol McKay

April 15, 2025

A man and a woman stand close to one another in front of a shelf filled with books.

“Why I Give” is a recurring series of articles about the people who support the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.

Meet Ian Hardin and Carol McKay. He is UGA’s Georgia Power Professor Emeritus of Fiber and Polymer Chemistry. She is a retired jewelry maker who volunteers with the Young Designers Sewing Program. This season they sponsored a performance by The King’s Singers.

I moved to Athens in 1994 and Carol a bit later. When the Performing Arts Center opened in April of 1996, I was there. I particularly remember the performance of the fourth movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony by the university orchestra and chorus. It was thrilling! Carol began attending with me in 2008. I always say that the thing that I have enjoyed most about Athens is the UGA Performing Arts Center.

Each season since, we have had performance series tickets, as well as tickets for individual performances. The variety of great music offered is impressive and demonstrates that Jeff Martin and the staff view the PAC as offering education as well as entertainment. We feel so fortunate to be able to leave our house and in 15-20 minutes be sitting ready to experience truly world-class soloists and ensembles. The PAC has been an important part of our lives for many years.
