“She is a pianist who makes lines sing beautifully and virtuosic passages dance, finding intimacy and eloquence at telling moments.”—BBC Music Magazine
UGA Presents welcomes internationally celebrated pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason back to Hodgson Concert Hall for a highly anticipated solo recital Thursday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. Known for her poetic insight, technical command, and adventurous programming, Kanneh-Mason brings a radiant and compelling program that spans beloved masterworks and vibrant contemporary music.
The evening features two of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most prominent solo works: the atmospheric Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27 No. 2 (“Moonlight”) and the monumental Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53 (“Waldstein”). Balancing these pillars of the repertoire is the virtuosic intensity of Gaspard de la nuit by Maurice Ravel, alongside two luminous recent pieces — Nocturne and Halo — by Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova. This performance is generously supported by Greg and Pamela Mitsoff.
Kanneh-Mason, who was the UGA Presents Artist in Focus during the 2023-24 season, is widely admired for her eclectic and intellectually curious recital programs. Her repertoire ranges from Haydn and Mozart to Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Gershwin, and beyond. Equally at home as a concerto soloist, she has appeared with major orchestras worldwide in works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff.
Her recent and upcoming seasons reflect her growing international stature. Highlights include a celebrated appearance at the First Night of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, concerto performances at Carnegie Hall, and major engagements throughout Europe and North America during the 2025-26 season. She also maintains a robust schedule of solo recitals and chamber music performances at leading venues around the world.
A Decca Classics recording artist, Kanneh-Mason has released four acclaimed solo albums, most recently Mendelssohn (2024), which brings renewed attention to both Felix Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny Mendelssohn. Her honors include the Leonard Bernstein Award from the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and an Opus Klassik Award for Best Young Artist.
This performance replaces a scheduled duo recital by Kanneh-Mason and her brother Sheku Kanneh-Mason, a cellist who is recovering from a finger injury. Tickets for the duo recital are valid for this solo recital.
