UGA Presents continues its 30th anniversary season with an evening celebrating six decades of extraordinary music making. Brazilian guitar legends Sérgio and Odair Assad bring their 60th Anniversary Farewell Tour to Ramsey Concert Hall Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Renowned worldwide for their impeccable ensemble playing, technical mastery, and expressive depth, Sérgio and Odair Assad have redefined the possibilities of the classical guitar duo. Their farewell tour marks a rare opportunity to experience the brothers live as they reflect on a career that has influenced generations of performers and composers.
The program showcases music closely associated with the Assads’ artistic journey, including works by Astor Piazzolla, Radamés Gnattali, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Egberto Gismonti, and original compositions by Sérgio Assad. Highlights include Assad’s One Week in Rio, a seven-movement musical portrait of the city, and Dyens en trois temps, a tribute to composer Roland Dyens.
THE ASSADS
Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad began playing together in childhood and launched their international career after winning a major prize at the 1979 Young Artists Competition in Bratislava. Since then, they have inspired dozens of composers to write new works for them and have collaborated with leading artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Gidon Kremer, and Dawn Upshaw, as well as orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra.
In 2026, the Assads celebrate their 60th anniversary with a new album of compositions by Sérgio Assad and a final tour across North America. Their recordings on Nonesuch and GHA Records have earned multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy awards and nominations, and in 2015 they received the Guitar Foundation of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
