For more than 50 years\, the Catalonian musician has rescued musical gems from the obscurity of neglect and given them a new life for all to enjoy. He makes a highly anticipated return to Athens with his latest project\, Songs\, Battles\, and Dances from the Old and the New Worlds 1100-1780. This program shines a light on more than 600 years of music of endurance and resistance from Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas. \nFeaturing 21 musicians\, the performance is anchored by Savall’s early music ensemble Hespèrion XXI and the vocal group La Capella Reial de Catalunya. The performance also includes Mexico’s Tembembe Ensamble Continuo and musicians from Canada and Guadeloupe. For 25 years\, this award-winning string quartet has achieved new heights by transforming familiar repertoire into sounds beyond perfection and by constantly seeking a dynamic exchange with themselves and with the audience. This evening will also include ”Rise” by Emmy Award-winning and GRAMMY®-nominated Adam Schoenberg\, who has twice been named among the Top 10 most performed living composers by orchestras in the United States. DESCRIPTION:Carmina Burana is a powerful cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935-36 based on a collection of twenty-four medieval poems. Recurring themes from Carmina Burana\, such as the “O Fortuna\,” have appeared in hundreds of films and television commercials. This recognizable piece continues to be a popular crowd pleasing experience for audience and musicians alike. There is nothing quite like the power of more than three hundred student musicians collaborating on a single concert. The University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra is joined by the UGA Hodgson Singers\, Treble Choir\, University Chorus\, UGA Glee Club\, as well as talented student and faculty soloists. Inspired by Robert Schumann’s early example\, composers from the early Romantic age all the way through the 21st century have contributed significantly to the genre. Russian master Anton Arensky\, teacher of Rachmaninov\, penned his sole quintet in his mature years\, and ever-popular French composer Camille Saint-Saëns began his prolific chamber music career with this early quintet of surprising skill and maturity.
