DESCRIPTION:UGA Signature Lecture Series \nThe Georgia Review and the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center invite the public to a reading with Finnish-American author Hanna Pylväinen\, where she will read from The End of Drum-Time\, her historical novel set in the Scandinavian tundra during 1851. The book\, which was a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award\, follows a Lutheran minister as he tries in vain to convert the native Sámi reindeer herders to his faith. The reading will be followed by a book sale\, signing\, and reception. Free admission\, tickets not required. Reception and book signing to follow. \nFree parking for this event is available in the Performing Arts Center surface lot. Paid parking is available in the Performing Arts Center deck.  \nRequests for accommodations should be made by contacting the Performing Arts Center Box Office at (706) 542-4400 as soon as possible prior to the scheduled lecture. \nPart of our season-long Dialogues series. Part of UGA’s Signature Lectures. \nPart of Nordic Dream: Voices from Denmark\, Finland\, Norway\, and Sweden \nABOUT HANNA PYLVÄINEN \nPylväinen is the author of the novels We Sinners\, which received the Whiting Award and the Balcones Fiction Prize\, and The End of Drum-Time\, a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award in fiction\, both from Henry Holt & Co. Her work has appeared in Harper’s\, The New York Times\, The New York Times Magazine\, the Chicago Tribune\, and The Wall Street Journal; she is the recipient of residencies at MacDowell\, Yaddo\, and the Lásságámmi Foundation\, as well as fellowships from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the American-Scandinavian Foundation\, two fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown\, a Princeton Arts Fellowship at Princeton University\, and a Cullman Fellowship at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars at the New York Public Library. She has taught at the University of Michigan\, Princeton University\, and Virginia Commonwealth University; currently\, she teaches at the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. She lives in Philadelphia.

But you can’t appreciate the man’s virtuosity until you see him up close and live.”—The Arts Fuse\nGroundbreaking banjoist\, composer\, and bandleader Béla Fleck has reconvened the original lineup of the Grammy Award-winning quartet Béla Fleck & The Flecktones\, with pianist and harmonica player Howard Levy back in the fold alongside bassist Victor Wooten and percussionist/Drumitarist Roy “Futureman” Wooten. While all manners of genres come into play — from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances — the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all its own. The Flecktones comprise a meeting of musical minds that remains\, as ever\, utterly indescribable. The band is joined by Flecktones alum Jeff Coffin on saxophone and the Tuvan singing group Alash for this one of a kind holiday program. \n11/18/2025: The previously announced VIP experience for this event has been canceled.
