SUMMARY:Payne Memorial Concert: Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 1967\, the Academy Chamber Ensemble draws its membership from London’s Academy of St. Martin in the Fields\, the world-renowned chamber orchestra founded in 1958 that is now led by Music Director Joshua Bell. The Chamber Ensemble specializes in the works of the larger-scale chamber music repertoire. For its first visit to Athens since 2012\, the ensemble plans a performance featuring French composer Jean Francaix’s frisky yet delicate Octet. The program concludes with Beethoven’s rich and shimmering Septet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20 — an enormously popular piece in the composer’s own lifetime that is still admired as one of the finest septets ever written. \nFree admission (tickets required). General admission seating. Tickets valid until 15 minutes prior to the start of the performance. \nWILLIAM JACKSON PAYNE MEMORIAL CONCERT\nThe Payne Memorial Concert is named for Dr. William Jackson “Jack” Payne\, former Dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences\, who founded the Franklin College Chamber Music Series in 1978. In honor of his efforts\, the Payne Memorial Concert is presented free to the public once each season. \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Theresa Chafin in Ramsey Concert Hall from 2:00-2:30 pm. \nRECEPTION\nPlease join us for a complimentary reception with the musicians in the Performing Arts Center lobby immediately following the performance. Light hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served.

SUMMARY:Chris Thile
DESCRIPTION:“The afternoon carried on like this — Thile gently guiding the show like he was turning the sides of a colorful\, musical Rubik’s Cube — never once letting the air between himself and the very close audience settle on any one aspect of what he had to and was capable of offering.”—No Depression\nAcclaimed Grammy Award-winning mandolinist\, singer\, songwriter\, composer\, and MacArthur Fellow recipient of the prestigious “Genius Grant\,” Chris Thile is a multifaceted musical talent\, described by The Guardian as “that rare being: an all-round musician\,” and hailed by NPR as a “genre-defying musical genius.” Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek\, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau. For four years\, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (the successor to A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook\, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike\, giving the listener “one joyous arc\, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty” (New York Times). \nOver the last year\, Thile has been touring with Nickel Creek in support of the critically acclaimed 2023 release Celebrants\, and captivating audiences with a playfully ambitious biographical composition entitled ATTENTION! (a narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra). \nThe wide-ranging program of Thile’s 2025-2026 solo performances will feature selections from his acclaimed solo recordings of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas – including the upcoming second volume out this autumn – alongside his signature mix of classical\, folk and improvisational brilliance.

SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2: UGA Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Rachmaninoff has been known as a barnstorming pianist/composer of the late romantic period. However\, his work as a symphonist is equally impressive as you will hear in his second symphony. The score is dedicated to Sergei Taneyev\, a Russian composer\, teacher\, theorist\, author\, and pupil of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This evening will be conducted by Nicholas Han as his final Doctor of Musical Arts recital.

SUMMARY:Camerata Nordica Octet
DESCRIPTION:“The Camerata Nordica are Swedish. They are also outstandingly good\, practised and magnetic in performance. Why magnetic? Because the empathy between the players is unique. They have no conductor and rely entirely upon mutual sensitivity\, deeply felt mutual intentions and good old fashioned eye contact and body language. ”—Musical Opinion (UK)\nFounded in 1974\, Camerata Nordica has become Sweden’s leading chamber orchestra. The musicians’ dynamic energy and shared musical purpose form the core of the group’s identity. The ensemble has garnered a reputation for its distinctive performance style\, captivating audiences by performing while standing up and occasionally by heart — as with Mendelssohn’s glorious Octet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20\, which will anchor the group’s first UGA Presents program. \nPart of Nordic Dream: Voices from Denmark\, Finland\, Norway\, and Sweden \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Theresa Chafin in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:Faculty Ensembles: Masterworks for Piano & Strings
DESCRIPTION:The two works being performed are the A Major Piano Quartet by Johannes Brahms and the C Minor Piano Quintet by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The evening features four of the UGA string faculty: Michael Heald\, violin; Maggie Snyder\, viola; Milton Masciadri\, double bass; and James Kim\, cello. The pianist for the evening will be guest artist Timothy Lovelace\, professor of collaborative piano at the University of Minnesota. While the Brahms may be rather more well-known to audiences\, the Vaughan Williams is a masterful work full of tonal richness and romantic sweep\, employing the same forces as Schubert’s famous “Trout” Quintet.

SUMMARY:Dreamers' Circus
DESCRIPTION:“Their music brilliantly encapsulates flamboyant technical prowess\, boundless imagination and instant melodic appeal.”—The Journal of Music\nFifteen years after meeting at a jam session in Copenhagen\, Dreamers’ Circus has emerged as a preeminent purveyor of Nordic folk and traditional music. The trio crafts a sound defined by their virtuosic abilities across a diverse range of instruments including fiddle\, accordion\, piano\, and cittern. They draw from their unique musical experiences to present a genre-bending mix of folk\, jazz\, and classical\, all infused with influences from popular music. The result is music that is resolutely contemporary\, rhythmically and melodically traditional\, and entirely captivating. \n\nPart of Nordic Dream: Voices from Denmark\, Finland\, Norway\, and Sweden
