SUMMARY:Athens Choral Festival
DESCRIPTION:On June 1\, 2024 it was my distinct privilege to conduct the Mozart Requiem at Carnegie Hall in New York City\, with an assembled chorus of 150 singers from 17 states around the country. That group gave a spectacular performance of that great work.  In the weeks that followed the idea to perform another concert in Athens with that group began to be considered.  An invitation was sent and 70 singers from 10 states have accepted\, and are coming to perform in Hodgson Hall for this special event.  The music to be performed is Mozart – Solemn Vespers and Forrest – Lux: The Dawn From on High.  Both are great works by great composers.  The Vespers are bright\, melodic\, rhythmic\, and exciting\, pure Mozart.  Lux is more personal\, but with much contemplation and exultation\, employing sweeping phrases and beautiful melodies.  Please join us — both pieces are music you will want to hear! \nJoe Napoli\, conductor

SUMMARY:Mahler: Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" UGA Symphony Orchestra and Combined Choirs
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the biggest concert of the year\, featuring over 300 student musicians. The University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra\, Hodgson Singers\, University Chorus\, and Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs will perform Symphony No. 2 in C minor by Gustav Mahler. Known as the Resurrection Symphony\, it was written between 1888 and 1894 and was first performed in 1895. This symphony was one of Mahler’s most popular and successful works during his lifetime. It was his first major work that established his lifelong view of the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. In this large work\, the composer further developed the creativity of “sound of the distance” and creating a “world of its own” aspects already seen in his First Symphony.

SUMMARY:Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Nathalie Stutzmann\, conductor Anna Geniushene\, piano
DESCRIPTION:“The most elegant and articulate words fail to do justice to Stutzmann’s performance. She is a consummate rock star on the podium. With her precise\, yet large and wild articulations\, she doesn’t ‘conduct’ so much as she seizes the full potential of every note and wrenches it loose from the silence that preceded it.”—ArtsATL \nExperience the seismic power of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1\, the ultimate musical thrill ride that surges with staggering virtuosity\, luxuriant melodies\, and thundering orchestral verve. The ASO welcomes the sensational 2022 Van Cliburn medalist Anna Geniushene\, who plays “with an exquisite touch and an almost infinite tonal palette” (La Scena). During the second half\, Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann shifts into the kaleidoscopic world of Maurice Ravel—the ultimate orchestral colorist. Leaning into the limitless nuance of the ASO’s artistry\, she presents three works including La valse\, a haunting\, volcanic dream of a Viennese waltz. \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Arielle Crumley in Ramsey Concert Hall from 2:15-2:45 pm.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Zakir Hussain’s Masters of Percussion
DESCRIPTION:It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Zakir Hussain (9 March 1951 – 15 December 2024). Arguably one of the greatest musicians of all time\, the multi-Grammy Award winner was also an exceptionally gracious\, humble and beautiful human being. It has been an honor to present him in concert at UGA on two occasions in the past. Our deepest condolences go to his family. His “Masters of Percussion” performance on April 10\, 2025\, has been canceled. All tickets will be refunded within the coming days. Please contact the UGA Performing Arts Center Box Office with any questions.  \n\n“A combination of theatricality\, musical heart and phenomenal virtuosity. It was over-the-top exciting.”—Seen and Heard International \nZakir Hussain is a musician of the highest order\, one whose consistently brilliant and enthralling performances have established him as a national treasure in his home country of India and one of its reigning cultural ambassadors. His playing is marked by uncanny intuition and masterful improvisational dexterity\, demonstrating a “virtuosity that is barely to be believed” (Washington Post). This cross-cultural collaborative performance combines the remarkable talents of the preeminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time with those of an impressive roster of percussionists.

SUMMARY:"All Classical: Mozart and Haydn"
DESCRIPTION:The “Classical” period in music directly followed the Baroque. This concert features two composers who were quintessential in creating the sound known today as Classical music. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a short-lived but prolific composer\, creating over 800 works. Franz Joseph Haydn is considered instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the string quartet and piano trio.

SUMMARY:Benjamin Beilman\, violin Gloria Chien\, piano
DESCRIPTION:“Poised and monstrously talented.”—Philadelphia Inquirer \nBenjamin Beilman is one of the leading violinists of his generation. He has won international praise for his passionate performances and deep rich tone which the Washington Post called “mightily impressive\,” and The New York Times described as “muscular with a glint of violence.” The Times has also praised his “handsome technique\, burnished sound\, and quiet confidence\,” and the Strad described his playing as “pure poetry.” \nBeilman has appeared with major orchestras like the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Rotterdam Philharmonic\, and Zurich Tonhalle\, and is on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music. He is dedicated to contemporary music\, with new works by Frederic Rzewski\, Gabriella Smith\, and Jennifer Higdon\, among others. He performs on the 1740 “Ysaÿe” Guarneri del Gesù\, on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation. \nHe made his UGA recital debut in 2014 and maintains an active and illustrious career as a recitalist and musical collaborator—recently touring the United States with the Berlin Philharmonic. \nTaiwanese-born pianist Gloria Chien has one of the most diverse musical lives as a noted performer\, concert presenter\, and educator. She made her orchestral debut at the age of sixteen with the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Thomas Dausgaard\, and she performed again with the BSO with Keith Lockhart. She has performed at the UGA Performing Arts Center on two previous occasions in collaborative performances with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and with Anthony McGill. \nThis performance replaces the previously announced concert by the Tetzlaff Quartet.

SUMMARY:"Symphonie Fantastique" conducted by resident conductor Michael Stern
DESCRIPTION:Hector Berlioz wrote semi-autobiographical program notes for this piece that allude to the romantic sufferings of a gifted artist who has poisoned himself with opium because of his unrequited love for a beautiful and fascinating woman. The artist’s reveries take him to a ball and to a pastoral scene in a field\, which is interrupted by a hallucinatory march to the scaffold\, leading to a fantastic dance. This is certain to be an audience favorite.

DESCRIPTION:“Connoisseurs of rarified Mozart pianism will be pleased to rediscover (as I did) the sparkling symmetry and ultra-precision of Uchida’s fingerwork\, the fortepiano-like ping of her sonority\, her impeccable tempo choices…and finely judged balances between hands.”—ClassicsToday.com \nA peerless interpreter of the works of Mozart\, Schubert\, Robert Schumann\, and Beethoven\, Mitsuko Uchida is widely celebrated as one of the most revered artists of our time. She has enjoyed a close relationship over many years with the world’s greatest orchestras and has been an artistic partner of Berlin’s Mahler Chamber Orchestra since 2016. SUMMARY:Anoushka Shankar
DESCRIPTION:“With nine Grammy nominations under her belt\, Shankar is firmly established as the 21st century’s most innovative sitar player.”—Pitchfork \nChapter III… \nAnoushka Shankar marks the culmination of her recent trilogy of mini-albums: ‘Chapter I: Forever\, For Now\,’ ‘Chapter II: How Dark it Is Before Dawn’ and ‘Chapter III: We Return to Light’ with a visionary new live show. Written and released back-to-back during two years of an experimental\, creatively-charged global tour of an ever-evolving programme\, the performance of each Chapter infused the composition of the next. After first exploring the transient\, bittersweet joy of a summer afternoon on Chapter I and an immersion into a healing\, womblike night on Chapter II\, Chapter III completes the cycle\, leading audiences through each movement and into the strong\, golden heat of morning- a time of strength\, wisdom and change. \nWith 30 years’ performance since her teenaged debut\, eleven Grammy nominations and an Honorary Degree in Music from Oxford University under her belt\, Anoushka has spent her career redefining the conventions of the sitar. Alongside an ensemble celebrated for their endless virtuosity\, sensitivity and ear for improvisation\, this show sees Anoushka expand the vocabulary of her sitar\, looping and bending sound to create a bold new Indo-futurist vision for her music. \nForever\, for now\nHow dark it is before dawn\nWe return to Light \nThis event is part of the 2025 UGA Humanities Festival\, presented by the UGA Humanities Council.

SUMMARY:Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at 300 Les Arts Florissants Théotime Langlois de Swarte\, Baroque violin
DESCRIPTION:“Théotime Langlois de Swarte reminds me why I fell in love with the Baroque violin in the first place.”—Gramophone \n“For decades [Les Arts Florissants] have been fulfilling the task of any truly important cultural institution: opening up new worlds of beauty and excitement\, both emotional and intellectual.”—New York Times \nWhen published in 1725 nobody could have imagined Vivaldi’s Opus 8\, Nos. 1-4 (The Four Seasons)\, would become one of the most beloved musical works of all time. Yet today\, 300 years on\, it remains as popular as ever. France’s Baroque supergroup\, Les Arts Florissants\, is joined by extraordinary violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte in a performance commemorating the anniversary of the music’s original publication. The program frames this iconic masterpiece afresh\, setting it alongside music Vivaldi would have known in Venice and compositions which were\, in turn\, inspired by his bold artistic vision. \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Brian Roach in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 pm.
