SUMMARY:Where the Light Begins
DESCRIPTION:In a season so often defined by sparkle and sound\, Where the Light Begins invites us to look inward—to the quiet strength and shared hope that connect us all. Through music that spans cultures\, languages\, and generations\, our singers remind us that light is not something we wait for\, but something we nurture within ourselves and offer to others. \nFrom the Swahili Amani (“peace”) to the principle of Umoja (“unity”)\, from the Hebrew Al Shlosha D’Varim to the timeless plea Dona Nobis Pacem\, this concert weaves together songs that speak of harmony\, compassion\, and community. Interwoven with festive and seasonal works\, the program reflects the beauty of many traditions while illuminating our shared longing for peace and connection.

SUMMARY:Branford Marsalis Quartet Belonging
DESCRIPTION:“He finds the classic jazz format of saxophone\, piano\, bass and drums an endless source of inspiration and\, over the years\, the quartet has developed a kind of group mind.”—The Guardian\nSaxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz Master\, Grammy Award winner\, and Tony and Emmy Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead\, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet. After receiving Grammy nominations on its last two albums\, Upward Spiral and The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul\, the Quartet recently made its Blue Note Records debut with the release of Belonging\, a full album interpretation of Keith Jarrett’s 1974 ECM album of the same name. This celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of original compositions\, jazz standards\, and popular classics. \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Senior Lecturer of Jazz David J Dangelo\,  Assistant Professor Greg Satterthwaite\, and Assistant Professor James Weidman in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:15-6:45 pm.

SUMMARY:Thursday Scholarship Series:The Ring of PolykratesUGA Opera Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Wilhelm Arndt has it all: a loving wife\, a long-awaited promotion\, and an unexpected inheritance. Life is golden—until Peter Vogel\, an old friend from the past\, arrives unannounced. With just one word\, Peter’s cordial visit turns to a roller-coaster of emotional chaos\, sending Wilhelm into a suspicious frenzy with hilarious results. Composed in 1914 by a 17-year-old Erich Wolfgang Korngold—decades before his Oscar-winning Hollywood triumph The Adventures of Robin Hood—this sparkling comic opera brims with youthful brilliance\, lyrical charm\, and a dash of psychological intrigue. Romantic\, clever\, and strikingly modern\, The Ring of Polykrates is a witty reminder: be careful what you wish for—perfection is a fragile thing.

SUMMARY:Faculty Ensembles: Masterworks for Piano & Strings
DESCRIPTION:The two works being performed are the A Major Piano Quartet by Johannes Brahms and the C Minor Piano Quintet by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The evening features four of the UGA string faculty: Michael Heald\, violin; Maggie Snyder\, viola; Milton Masciadri\, double bass; and James Kim\, cello. The pianist for the evening will be guest artist Timothy Lovelace\, professor of collaborative piano at the University of Minnesota. While the Brahms may be rather more well-known to audiences\, the Vaughan Williams is a masterful work full of tonal richness and romantic sweep\, employing the same forces as Schubert’s famous “Trout” Quintet.

SUMMARY:Camerata Nordica Octet
DESCRIPTION:“The Camerata Nordica are Swedish. They are also outstandingly good\, practised and magnetic in performance. Why magnetic? Because the empathy between the players is unique. They have no conductor and rely entirely upon mutual sensitivity\, deeply felt mutual intentions and good old fashioned eye contact and body language. ”—Musical Opinion (UK)\nFounded in 1974\, Camerata Nordica has become Sweden’s leading chamber orchestra. The musicians’ dynamic energy and shared musical purpose form the core of the group’s identity. The ensemble has garnered a reputation for its distinctive performance style\, captivating audiences by performing while standing up and occasionally by heart — as with Mendelssohn’s glorious Octet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20\, which will anchor the group’s first UGA Presents program. \nPart of Nordic Dream: Voices from Denmark\, Finland\, Norway\, and Sweden \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Theresa Chafin in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 pm.
