DESCRIPTION:UGA Signature Lecture Series \nThe Georgia Review and the University of Georgia Performing Arts Center invite the public to a reading with Finnish-American author Hanna Pylväinen\, where she will read from The End of Drum-Time\, her historical novel set in the Scandinavian tundra during 1851. The book\, which was a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award\, follows a Lutheran minister as he tries in vain to convert the native Sámi reindeer herders to his faith. The reading will be followed by a book sale\, signing\, and reception. Free admission\, tickets not required. Reception and book signing to follow. \nFree parking for this event is available in the Performing Arts Center surface lot. Paid parking is available in the Performing Arts Center deck.  \nRequests for accommodations should be made by contacting the Performing Arts Center Box Office at (706) 542-4400 as soon as possible prior to the scheduled lecture. \nPart of our season-long Dialogues series. Her work has appeared in Harper’s\, The New York Times\, The New York Times Magazine\, the Chicago Tribune\, and The Wall Street Journal; she is the recipient of residencies at MacDowell\, Yaddo\, and the Lásságámmi Foundation\, as well as fellowships from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the American-Scandinavian Foundation\, two fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown\, a Princeton Arts Fellowship at Princeton University\, and a Cullman Fellowship at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars at the New York Public Library. She has taught at the University of Michigan\, Princeton University\, and Virginia Commonwealth University; currently\, she teaches at the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. She lives in Philadelphia.

While all manners of genres come into play — from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances — the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all its own. For more than 50 years\, the Catalonian musician has rescued musical gems from the obscurity of neglect and given them a new life for all to enjoy. He makes a highly anticipated return to Athens with his latest project\, Songs\, Battles\, and Dances from the Old and the New Worlds 1100-1780. This program shines a light on more than 600 years of music of endurance and resistance from Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas. \nFeaturing 21 musicians\, the performance is anchored by Savall’s early music ensemble Hespèrion XXI and the vocal group La Capella Reial de Catalunya.
