DESCRIPTION:1685 was a banner year. Two little boys were born in Germany\, about 100 miles apart. One is among the world’s most influential composers. The other wrote Messiah. Six hundred miles to the south\, a third boy was learning the violin. Today\, they dominate western music written before the arrival of Mozart. \nEach year\, around the world\, professional and community choirs—as well as many intrepid audience members—gather to sing George Frideric Handel’s massive oratorio written on the life of Christ. On YouTube\, a single video of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has over 248 million views. And\, thanks to NASA’s Voyager mission\, two pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach are hurtling through interstellar space at over 38\,000 miles per hour. \nOf the three\, Bach was the least traveled. He lived his life in central Germany. Twice he hoped to meet Handel\, but their schedules never aligned. He encountered Vivaldi through a book of Italian concertos and was so impressed he made keyboard transcriptions of them. (For many years\, Bach’s transcriptions served as a tether between Vivaldi\, who was largely forgotten\, and oblivion.) Vivaldi became a jumping-off point for Bach as he wrote concertos of his own. \nProbably\, Handel and Vivaldi did meet. In his early twenties\, Handel traveled to Italy\, learning the language\, learning to imitate Italian music\, and readying himself for a brilliant career in Great Britain. \nProgram to consist of selections from Bach\, Vivaldi\, and Handel. \nPlease Note: This concert will be performed without intermission. DESCRIPTION:The Pavel Haas Quartet has been called “the world’s most exciting string quartet” (Gramophone) and is revered across the globe for its richness of timbre\, infectious passion\, and intuitive rapport. The group takes its name from the Czech composer Pavel Haas\, who died at Auschwitz in 1944 and whose legacy includes three enduring string quartets. SUMMARY:Michael Barenboim and West-Eastern Divan Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:This ensemble features an octet of players drawn from the larger West-Eastern Divan Orchestra of Seville\, Spain. Established to give young musicians the opportunity to promote coexistence and intercultural dialogue as an alternative solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, the orchestra draws musicians from countries in the Middle East with Egyptian\, Iranian\, Israeli\, Jordanian\, Lebanese\, Palestinian\, Syrian\, and Spanish heritage. Coming to the U.S. for only the second time since its formation\, the chamber group is led by violinist Michael Barenboim\, a dynamic soloist who has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic\, Vienna Philharmonic\, Israel Philharmonic\, and Chicago Symphony. \nPre-performance talk in Ramsey Concert Hall at 6:45 pm (free admission).

DESCRIPTION:“Her voice is disarmingly natural.” —New York Times \nLeyla McCalla finds inspiration from her past and present\, whether it is her Haitian heritage or her adopted home of New Orleans. This multi-instrumentalist and alumna of the Grammy-winning African American string band\, the Carolina Chocolate Drops\, has risen to produce a distinctive sound that reflects the union of her roots and experience. McCalla’s music is at once earthy\, elegant\, soulful\, and witty. It vibrates with three centuries of history\, yet also feels strikingly fresh\, distinctive\, and contemporary and features lyrics sung in English\, French\, and Haitian Creole. \nMcCalla’s program will feature selections from Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever\, a multidisciplinary work that follows her personal journey as she uncovered the history of Radio Haiti\, Haiti’s first privately owned Creole-speaking radio station. \n\nPre-performance talk by the artist in Hodgson Concert Hall at 6:45 pm (free admission). \nIn order to facilitate a more intimate concert experience\, this performance has been moved from Hodgson Concert Hall to Ramsey Concert Hall.  \nMs. McCalla will host a free workshop open to students and the general public on Tuesday\, January 17\, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.\, in Ramsey Concert Hall.

DESCRIPTION:“The Harlem Quartet takes the whole universe of music as their domain.”—San Diego Union-Tribune \nHarlem Quartet has been praised for its “panache” (New York Times) and for “bringing a new attitude to classical music\, one that is fresh\, bracing\, and intelligent” (Cincinnati Enquirer). The quartet advances diversity in classical music\, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by composers of color. Their program culminates in one of the most beloved string quartets — by Claude Debussy — after a set that ranges from bittersweet rags to a familiar jazz standard. \nDue to illness\, Jaime Amador will not perform. Paul Laraia of the Catalyst String Quartet will take his place.  \nPre-performance talk in Ramsey Concert Hall at 2:15 pm (free admission) \n\n\nPayne Memorial Concert \n\n\nThe Payne Memorial Concert is named in honor of Dr. William Jackson “Jack” Payne\, former Dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences\, who founded the Franklin College Chamber Music Series in 1978. Dean Payne had a great love of the arts and his wish was that the college should make a significant contribution to the cultural life of both the University and the Athens community through the chamber music series. In honor of his efforts\, the Payne Memorial Concert is presented free to the public once each season.
