SUMMARY:Sandeep Das & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as a “creator of myths with Houdini-like skills” (Sydney Morning Herald)\, Sandeep Das is among the world’s foremost Indian tabla virtuosos. He made his debut at age seventeen alongside legendary sitar maestro Ravi Shankar\, launching an international career that spans more than three decades. Over the years\, he has collaborated with leading artists and ensembles across the globe\, including Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble—of which he has been a core member for more than twenty years. \nShastriya Sangeet\, the classical music of the Indian subcontinent\, is renowned for its soul-stirring emotion\, highly-developed melodic system (Raga)\, virtuosic improvisations\, complex rhythms\, and philosophical depth. It is both a modern\, living tradition and an icon of the ancient world\, stemming from more than 4\,000 years of innovation and cultivation. \nRaga\, Rhythm\, and Rasa explores the emotional sentiments of Indian Classical Music known as the Navarasa. From the heroism of Veer Rasa to the sweet romance of Sringara\, a mesmerizing dialogue of exotic rhythms\, intricate compositions\, expressive phrasing\, spontaneous improvisations\, and joyful folk melodies will unfold. \n“Das and his fellow travelers have delivered a road map for some irresistible aural adventures.”—Downbeat \nPERFORMANCE TALK\nJoin us for a free pre-performance talk by Sandeep Das in Ramsey Concert Hall prior to the performance from 6:45-7:10 pm.
