In this dynamic collaboration\, chamber music powerhouses Boston Brass and Turtle Island String Quartet join forces to present bold new interpretations that trace the story’s sweeping romance and heartbreaking tragedy through music. The program features works by Kabalevsky\, Prokofiev\, and Elvis Costello—culminating in a thrilling performance of Leonard Bernstein’s iconic West Side Story suite. \nPart of American Panorama: Voices of a Nation at 250 \nWILLIAM JACKSON PAYNE MEMORIAL CONCERT\nThe Payne Memorial Concert is named for Dr. William Jackson “Jack” Payne\, former Dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences\, who founded the Franklin College Chamber Music Series in 1978. In honor of his efforts\, the Payne Memorial Concert is presented free to the public once each season. \nRECEPTION\nPlease join us for a complimentary reception in the Performing Arts Center lobby during intermission. Light hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served.

Any open seats remaining just before showtime will be filled from the standby line.  \n“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band is the oldest continuously active professional music organization in the United States. Since 17th Director John Philip Sousa was first granted permission to tour the country by President Benjamin Harrison in 1891\, the Marine Band has delivered a White House experience from Washington\, D.C.\, to the far-reaching corners of our nation. These special concerts have now grown into an experience shared across generations of Americans as well as a cherished tradition for families\, veterans and music-lovers alike. \nFor 2026\, Marine Band Director Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin will program musical selections in the style of Sousa: Concertgoers can expect to experience a mix of works including traditional band repertoire\, Sousa marches\, contemporary compositions\, vocal and instrumental solos and a patriotic salute to the Armed Forces. \nFree admission (tickets required; valid only until 15 minutes prior to the start of the performance). General admission seating.
