Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell coming to UGA in April

ATHENS, Ga. — UGA Presents has announced that Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell will replace Patti LuPone for an Apr. 24 concert at the Performing Arts Center.

“Due to her participation in the spring Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, Ms. LuPone has canceled her performance at UGA,” said Performing Arts Center director Jeffrey A. Martin. “We are disappointed but I am very pleased that the multi-talented Brian Stokes Mitchell has graciously agreed to step in to perform in Ms. Lupone’s place at the same date and time.”

Mitchell won a Tony Award for his leading role in the 2000 Broadway revival of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate. He also received Tony Award nominations for his performance in the original Broadway cast of Ragtime as well as the 2003 revival of Man of La Mancha. In addition to his stage credits, Mitchell is a prolific TV and film actor with appearances that include Glee, Madam Secretary, Mr. Robot, Frasier and Trapper John, M.D. He voiced the role of Jethro in the Dreamworks animation film, The Prince of Egypt.

Mitchell will make his UGA Presents debut with Plays With Music, a one-man show celebrating his long career as Broadway’s “last leading man” (New York Times). Backed by a trio of musicians, he will showcase his signature baritone in a concert featuring musical theater classics and American songbook standards.

Mitchell will perform Plays With Music Apr. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. All tickets previously purchased for Patti LuPone’s performance will be honored at the same date and time. Tickets for Mitchell’s performance can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center box office, online at pac.uga.edu or by calling 706-542-4400.

The Performing Arts Center is located at 230 River Rd. The box office is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to each performance.
