Diavolo

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 AND 25, 8PM
FINE ARTS THEATRE

One of America's most innovative and creative dance companies comes to UGA for the first performances in the beautifully restored Fine Arts Theatre. Founded in 1992 by choreographer Jacques Heim, Diavolo is comprised of dancers, gymnasts, and actors who work collaboratively under Heim's guidance to create large-scale interdisciplinary performances that examine the funny and frightening ways individuals act in their environment. Everyday items such as doors, chairs, and stairways provide the back-drop for dramatic movement—leaping, flying, twirling—that creates metaphors for the challenge of relationships, the absurdities of life, and the struggle to maintain our humanity in an increasingly technological world.

Academy of St. Martin in the Fields

INON BARNATAN, PIANO
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31, 3PM
HODGSON CONCERT HALL

Sir Neville Marriner said that the small ensemble he founded in 1958 "had no intention of giving any concerts or continuing forever." Happily, whatever the initial intention, fifty years later the Academy is firmly established as one of the world's most important orchestras. According to the London Times, "As you travel around the globe, the Academy's name has an aura possessed by no other British orchestra." After an absence of ten years, the orchestra returns to Hodgson Hall with Inon Barnatan, the sensational young pianist, in an all-Mozart program. Critics have uniformly praised Barnatan for his prodigious technique and artistic maturity. Welcome back the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
