They are the world’s most famous and revered traditional Irish band. Six-time Grammy Award winners, The Chieftains have reinvented traditional Irish music on an international scale. They were the first Western musicians to perform on the Great Wall of China. In 1979, they performed to a live audience of more than 1.3 million people during Pope Paul II’s visit to Ireland. They were the first ensemble to perform a concert in the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Their music transcends not only stylistic and traditional boundaries, but generational as well. After fifty years of making some of the most beautiful music in the world, the music of The Chieftains remains as fresh and relevant as when they first began.
