Mark Cedel, Conductor
Béla Fleck, Banjo
Béla Fleck’s virtuosity as a banjo player is unrivaled, and the multiple Grammy Award winner is also known as one of today’s most versatile and creative performers. Constantly expanding his musical world, Fleck has already seriously explored the possibilities of taking the banjo beyond bluegrass to world music and jazz. With his groundbreaking new Concerto for Banjo and Orchestra, he has entered the realm of classical music as well. Commissioned by the Nashville Symphony, Fleck spent the better part of a year composing the piece, which had its premiere in Nashville last September. Béla Fleck joins the UGA Symphony Orchestra for a performance of the concerto in this concert, which will be a bonus addition to both the Masterworks and Classics series.
